10 Great Activities for Senior Citizens

Staying mentally and physically active in your senior years may help you stave off some of the negative effects associated with aging. From reading to riding a comfort bicycle, here are 10 great activities that can enrich your life as a senior citizen.

  1. Read

Reading can keep your mind sharp. It’s also a versatile activity that can be done practically anywhere. Whether you fancy romance novels or you like to boost your excitement with a little mystery, there are plenty of books to keep you entertained on a daily basis.

  1. Walk

Walking is one of the easiest forms of exercise. It’s gentle on your joints and will elevate your heart rate without sending it through the roof. It’s also a great way to increase oxygen to your brain and get a natural mood boost.

  1. Go Fishing

Fishing is a relaxing activity that is fun to enjoy with someone you love. There is something about spending time in the great outdoors that is therapeutic and soothing for people of all ages.

  1. Ride a Bike

If you’re looking for ways to increase your physical exertion without going overboard, consider investing in a comfort bicycle. There are many bicycles for seniors that are designed to minimize stress on your joints and provide you with the most enjoyable ride possible.

  1. Start a Hobby

You know the saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”? Throw it out the window. The truth is, you’re never too old to learn something new. Starting a hobby is a great way to enrich your senior years.

  1. Garden

If you want to keep yourself busy and participate in an activity that yields fruit (or vegetables), take up gardening. To minimize the stress on your body, have garden boxes installed so you don’t have to bend over very far to tend your plants.

  1. Play Card or Board Games

Interacting regularly with others is a key part of healthy aging. Whether your grandkids are visiting or you’re looking for things to do with other members of your senior living community, playing card or board games can be a lot of fun.

  1. Do Jigsaw Puzzles

If you have a family history of dementia or you’re simply trying to keep your mind young, jigsaw puzzles can help. They force you to use your brain to pay attention to little details and analyze shapes. It’s also fulfilling to finish a puzzle and see the direct result of your labor.

  1. Participate in a Senior Exercise Program

Many communities offer senior exercise programs that are tailored to the needs of aging adults. In particular, swimming and cycling are recommended for seniors who want to improve their physical fitness. Both are easy on the joints and if you find a hybrid bicycle for sale, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to ride on anything from paved roads to dirt trails.

  1. Play Tennis or Badminton

Tennis and badminton are great activities for relatively healthy seniors. They’ll keep you physically active without requiring you to run around an entire basketball court or baseball field.

All of these activities are great options for senior citizens and can help you maintain a good quality of life as you age. Choose one or more to try today.
